Billy Mill Lane, North Shields, NE29 8LP

Zambia

Bryan Smith, a member of Ritson’s Guild, had been working in Zambia between 1989 and 1991 where he made contact with and gave help to a Scout Troop at Kitwe. Apparently they operate with “next to nothing” in the way of equipment, uniforms, badges and instruction books.

When he was home on leave he told the Guild about the Scouts in Kitwe and when he returned to Zambia he took with him some Scout books and pamphlets, and six Silva compasses bought with a donation from the Guild.

On his next trip home on leave, Bryan was asked to deliver some items that had been made by the Kitwe Scouts and Leaders as gifts for Ritson’s Own to show their gratitude. They included two carved timber trophies and figures made from scraps of metal and bits of Coca–Cola cans (see below).

There is also a cup which is inscribed: “To Tynemouth Scout District from Kitwe Scout District, Zambia”.

On his return to Zambia for a final short stay, Bryan took with him a lot of Scout handbooks, some neckerchiefs and various small items of equipment donated or bought with another gift from Ritson’s Guild.
